Melita is the personification of Malta dating to Roman occupation of the island, and her use on modern Maltese coinage predates independence — she appeared on British colonial issues before the Maltese government reclaimed her as a national symbol. This 2018 issue is part of a long-running Central Bank series pairing her figure with themes drawn from Maltese history and culture, each release limited in mintage and aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation.
