| Additional information |
Marija Jurić Zagorka was Croatia's first professional female journalist and a prolific novelist whose historical fiction shaped popular Croatian identity through the early twentieth century. She worked for decades at the Zagreb newspaper Obzor under considerable institutional resistance — editors repeatedly attempted to suppress her byline on the grounds that journalism was unsuitable work for women. Croatia joining the eurozone in January 2023 triggered a transitional period for the Croatian National Bank's commemorative program, and this 2025 issue is among the first gold commemoratives denominated in euros under the new monetary framework.
