| Reverse description | A bold Maltese Cross occupies the centre of the field, its four arms elaborately decorated with foliate and lion motifs in the re-entrant angles between the arms. A smaller cross crosslet is depicted at the very centre. Radiating sunburst lines extend from the cross to the periphery. The country name MALTA is inscribed along the upper left arc of the legend, with the date 2024 appearing within a cartouche at the top arm of the cross. The fineness mark 9999 appears twice in the left and right fields, and the inscription 1 OZ FINE GOLD is positioned along the lower periphery. |

Malta's Maltese Cross predates the Knights of St. John's arrival on the island by centuries as a heraldic form, but it was the Order's 268-year tenure — from 1530 until Napoleon's largely bloodless seizure of the island in 1798 — that fused the symbol permanently to Maltese national identity. The Central Bank has returned to this motif repeatedly for its bullion and commemorative gold program, positioning the cross as the anchor image of the series.
