The teston was a silver coin introduced in France under Louis XII around 1513, named for the prominent royal portrait — the testa — that distinguished it from earlier medieval issues. This gold restrike is part of Monnaie de Paris's long-running "Trésors Monétaires" program, which revisits historically significant French coin types in precious metal collector formats.
The original teston eventually fell out of favor as silver coinage was debased across the sixteenth century, its fine weight eroded by successive monetary ordinances.
