Issued as part of Monnaie de Paris's ongoing "Les Arbres de la République" series, which draws on deep French republican symbolism attached to specific native tree species. The laurel's association with civic virtue and imperial triumph runs from Roman antiquity through Napoleonic iconography, making it an awkward but deliberate choice for a republic that spent considerable effort dismantling exactly that symbolism after 1870.
