Part of Spain's ongoing "Joyas de Numismática Española" series, which revisits historically significant earlier issues in restruck or reinterpreted form. This Granada piece commemorates the fall of the Nasrid Emirate in 1492 — the final act of the Reconquista — an event that freed the Spanish Crown to redirect both military resources and, crucially, royal attention toward Columbus's westward venture, approved that same year in Santa Fe.
Juan Carlos I abdicated the following year, in June 2014, making 2013 the final full year of his reign and the last vintage for issues struck under his authority.
