Jean I of Luxembourg — more properly Jean, Grand Duke, acting as Prince-Lieutenant from 1961 until his accession in 1964 — is the subject of this commemorative gold issue struck well into his reign. The 1996 date places it among the earlier Luxembourg commemorative gold program, before such issues became routine across European royal houses anticipating the euro transition.
