The Halubje bell ringers — known locally as the zvončari — practice a midwinter ritual centered on the Kastav region of Liburnia, in which participants don animal skins and enormous cowbells to drive away evil spirits. UNESCO inscribed the tradition on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009, one of Croatia's earliest entries. The Croatian National Bank has developed a consistent practice of issuing commemorative gold pieces tied to UNESCO-recognized Croatian heritage, of which this is among the most recent.
