100 Euros Gaudí Centenary - Park Güell

Park Güell was originally conceived not as a public park but as a private residential development — Eusebi Güell's attempt to build a planned garden city on the outskirts of Barcelona along English lines. It failed commercially; only two houses were ever sold, one of which Gaudí himself occupied. The Barcelona city council took it over in 1918, six years after Güell abandoned the project and two years before Gaudí's death.

This issue falls within Spain's ongoing commemorative gold program marking the centenary of Gaudí's 1926 death, when he was struck by a tram on the Gran Via and initially left unattended because passersby mistook him for a beggar.
