The gajeta falkuša is a double-ended wooden fishing boat native to the island of Vis, its hull form largely unchanged since at least the early 19th century. Croatia nominated it to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, receiving inscription in 2023 — the direct prompt for this issue. The Croatian National Bank has built a consistent program of gold commemoratives around endangered or protected craft traditions, and the falkuša fits squarely into that series logic.
Vis was a closed military zone under Yugoslav administration until 1989, which inadvertently preserved both the boat-building tradition and the broader material culture of the island with unusual completeness.
