Obverse description The papal coat of arms of Pope Francis occupies the central field, featuring a shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The shield bears the Christogram IHS within a radiant sun, the personal emblem of the Jesuit order, flanked by a star and a spikenard flower. A scroll beneath the shield carries the papal motto MISERANDO ATQUE ELIGENDO in Latin. The circular legend FRANCISCVS PONT. MAX. ANNO V MMXVII runs along the upper periphery, with the engravers' names DE GIORGI and COLANERI INC. inscribed in the lower field.

Additional information

Issued under Pope Francis as part of the Vatican's annual gold coin program, this piece commemorates Saint John the Apostle and falls within a series that has become one of the few remaining sources of legal Vatican coinage available to the general public — the Holy See issues no circulating coinage, making these annual collector pieces the only Vatican coins actually produced in meaningful numbers. Mintage is strictly limited by Governorate decree, and unsold remainders are not released into secondary channels.
