The centenary of Edvard Rusjan's flight on November 25, 1909 — widely recognized as the first powered aircraft flight in the territory of the former Austro-Hungarian lands — prompted this issue. Rusjan, a self-taught engineer from Trieste, built his biplane Eda I with his brother Josip using little more than bamboo, cloth, and a repurposed engine. He died in a crash along the Sava River just two years later.
Slovenia's claim to this aviation milestone is not without dispute, but the 1909 date has been formally recognized in regional aeronautical history circles.
