The Speyer Cathedral series belongs to Germany's ongoing UNESCO World Heritage gold program, which has issued coins for each of the listed German sites since 2011. Speyer Dom — the Kaiserdom — is the largest surviving Romanesque cathedral in the world and served as the burial church of eight Holy Roman Emperors and kings. Construction began under Conrad II around 1030, though the nave was substantially rebuilt under Henry IV in the late eleventh century following decades of structural ambition that repeatedly outpaced the original design.
The .9999 fineness is notable — earlier issues in this program were struck in .9999 as well, keeping the series consistent but above the more common .900 gold of older German federal issues.
