| Additional information |
The Central Bank of Malta was established in 1968 under the Central Bank of Malta Act, taking over monetary functions previously handled by the Currency Board, which had operated under British colonial arrangements. The bank's early decades were spent building reserve infrastructure and managing the Maltese lira through the turbulence of oil shocks and the country's post-independence economic reorientation.
Malta joined the eurozone on 1 January 2008, making this commemorative anniversary issue somewhat pointed — half the institution's existence predates the currency it now administers.
