Croatia adopted the euro on January 1, 2023, making the Croatian National Bank one of the newest members of the Eurosystem. This commemorative issue honors Faust Vrančić, whose 1595 Machinae Novae illustrated a pulley block system remarkably close to what later became known as Puratić's Power Block — the hydraulic deck winch developed by Mario Puratić in the 1950s that revolutionized commercial fishing worldwide and was manufactured in his adopted home of California.
The .9999 fineness is notable; the Croatian Mint has consistently targeted the top purity tier for its gold commemoratives from the inaugural euro-era series onward.
