Nostra Aetate, promulgated by Paul VI in October 1965 as one of the final documents of the Second Vatican Council, marked a formal repudiation of the charge of collective Jewish guilt for the crucifixion — a theological position that had fueled centuries of Church-sanctioned antisemitism. The document's fourth section, addressing relations with Judaism, was the most contested during drafting and required direct intervention from John XXIII to survive opposition within the Curia.
This 2023 issue belongs to Vatican's ongoing commemorative series dedicated to Council documents, each released under Francis as part of a broader effort to mark the Council's 60th anniversary cycle.
