The country name LËTZEBUERG arcs along the upper legend, with the date 1998 to the left and the denomination 100 EURO prominently displayed across the lower field. Issued to mark the 1,300th anniversary of the Abbey of Echternach, founded by the Northumbrian missionary Willibrord in 698 AD. Willibrord, sent from England by Pepin of Herstal's patronage, established the abbey as a center of manuscript illumination and scholarship — its scriptorium produced some of the finest Hiberno-Saxon gospel books in Carolingian Europe.
The Dancing Procession of Echternach, still held annually at Whitsuntide and now a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is directly tied to Willibrord's cult.
