The flanking crowned mint marks (M) of the Royal Mint of Madrid appear to either side of the medallion at the upper field. The legend 100 EURO arcs above the central medallion, while JOYAS DEL MUSEO CASA DE LA MONEDA curves along the lower border, all in raised Latin characters against a recessed darkened rim. |

This piece recreates the 2 Escudos struck at the Lima mint in 1715 — the year eleven ships of the Nueva España and Tierra Firme fleets were swallowed by a hurricane off the Florida coast in July, sending an estimated seven million pesos in gold and silver to the bottom of the Atlantic. The Lima issues aboard those vessels have been recovered by salvagers for three centuries, making colonial cob coinage from that year inseparable from the disaster in collector memory.
