This is a pattern issue from Portugal's national mint, struck in 1992 as part of an extended series of exploratory pieces produced by INCM during a period when the escudo's circulating coinage was being systematically revised ahead of Portugal's deeper integration into the European Monetary System. Patterns from this reference range in the Gomes catalogue were rarely released beyond institutional and collector channels, and the copper-nickel composition distinguishes it from bimetallic trial variants struck for the same denomination in the same period.
