Obverse description The national arms of Cape Verde — a circular emblem featuring a star above an open book and cogwheel, encircled by the legend UNIDADE TRABALHO PROGRESSO — is displayed centrally within a wreath composed of stylised corn stalks and pineapples, with a scallop shell at the base. Below the arms, the denomination 100 appears in large numerals, followed by the inscription ESCUDOS CABOVERDIANOS and the date 1990 in the lower field. The country name REPÚBLICA DE CABO VERDE arcs along the left and right rim in bold raised lettering.

Reverse description A three-quarter-length effigy of Pope John Paul II is depicted facing slightly left, vested in pontifical robes with a pectoral cross, his right arm raised in blessing and his left hand extended outward. A curved legend arcs along the upper rim reading VISITA DE S.S. O PAPA JOÃO PAULO II, with two small five-pointed stars flanking the lower field. The inscription JANEIRO 1990 appears along the lower rim, recording the month and year of the papal visit to Cape Verde.
