Pope John Paul II visited Cape Verde in January 1990 as part of a broader African tour, making it one of the smallest nations — by both population and land area — on his itinerary. The visit lasted only a matter of hours, a stopover rather than a pastoral mission in any extended sense.
Cape Verde had been a one-party Marxist-Leninist state since independence in 1975, and the papal visit coincided almost precisely with the country's political opening: multiparty elections followed in 1991.
