Obverse description The arms of Portugal — the traditional shield bearing five escutcheons in saltire, each charged with five bezants, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles — are displayed prominently in the center of the field, rendered in high relief. Flanking the shield are two ornate foliate supporters in the classical Portuguese heraldic style. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 100 ESCUDOS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The notation 'Pd 1 oz' appears in the lower field, confirming the one troy ounce palladium content. The entire design is enclosed within a rope border, giving the coin a refined, medallic appearance.

Reverse description The reverse depicts a detailed rendering of a 15th-century Portuguese lateen-rigged caravel under full sail, its triangular sail billowing as it navigates open waters, symbolic of the Age of Discovery. To the lower left, a stylized palm frond evokes the tropical coastlines of West Africa reached by Portuguese explorers. To the right of the vessel, the inscription RIO GAMBIA 1446 records the discovery of the Gambia River by Nuno Tristão. The explorer's name NVNO TRISTÃO arcs prominently along the upper field. In the lower exergue, the year 1987 is inscribed, with the engravers' signatures ISABEL · F. BRANCO appearing in the right field, and the INCM mint mark discreetly placed at the bottom.
