Reverse description A square-rigged caravel, identified by the legend AVE MARIA on its principal sail, is depicted sailing over a cartographic representation of the Madeira archipelago. The island of Madeira is inscribed below the vessel and Porto Santo above to the right, reflecting the historical sequence of their Portuguese discovery. Discovery dates of 1420 for Madeira and 1419 for Porto Santo flank the respective island names around the periphery. The date of issue, 1989, appears in the lower exergual area, flanked by ornamental crosses, with the engravers' signatures F. BRANCO and ISABEL C and the mint mark INCM also present.
