| Additional information |
Issued to commemorate the autonomous region of Madeira, this coin appeared during a period when Portugal was actively asserting its post-revolutionary regional identity — the archipelago had gained autonomous status in 1976 under the new democratic constitution, following decades of centralized control under the Estado Novo. Porto Santo, the smaller island of the group, rarely receives equal billing; its inclusion here reflects the constitutional standing of the full region rather than any touristic afterthought.
The .925 silver striking was produced in limited numbers relative to the base metal companion issue, making the silver version considerably harder to source today.
