Obverse description The Portuguese national coat of arms — a shield quartered with five inescutcheons each bearing five bezants in saltire, surrounded by seven castles, all set within a pointed shield — occupies the central field, enclosed by a beaded inner circle. The legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 100 ESCUDOS appears along the lower periphery, each separated by a small floral ornament. The entire design is framed by a prominent beaded border running the full circumference of the coin.
