Reverse description The reverse presents a bold, high-relief bust of the celebrated Portuguese novelist Camilo Castelo Branco, shown three-quarter facing left in a contemplative pose with his hand raised near his chin. A background of superimposed crosses in low relief alludes to themes of faith and mortality prominent in his literary works. The legend 'CAMILO CASTELO BRANCO' curves along the upper periphery in incuse lettering. The birth and death years '1825' and '1890' are inscribed in two lines to the right of the portrait, and the engraver's signature 'Vilar' appears in cursive script at the lower right of the field.
