Obverse description The Portuguese national coat of arms — a white escutcheon charged with five blue inescutcheons in saltire, each bearing five white bezants, surrounded by a red bordure charged with seven golden castles — is centrally positioned in the field, rendered in high relief against a polished background. The design occupies a raised inner disc, set off from the surrounding annular legend band by a smooth, recessed border ring. The circular legend reads REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA along the upper arc and the denomination 100$00 along the lower arc, separated by raised pellet stops, all in bold upright Roman capitals. The overall composition is austere and heraldic in character, consistent with the standard republican coinage aesthetic of the period.
