The Banco Nacional Ultramarino's 100 Escudos series for Portuguese Guinea ran through several closely related issues in the 1950s, all printed by Thomas De La Rue in London. Pick 43 belongs to the 1959 date, distinguishable from adjacent issues primarily by the date printed on the face — the plate design itself changed little across the run. BNU held a privileged position as the sole note-issuing bank across multiple Portuguese overseas territories simultaneously, meaning the same London printer was producing parallel series for Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, and São Tomé during overlapping periods.
Watermark security was the principal anti-counterfeiting measure. No known major printing errors or varieties have been documented for this specific date.
