Banco Nacional Ultramarino occupied a peculiar constitutional position — it was a private institution holding the exclusive right to issue currency across Portuguese overseas territories, a concession renewed repeatedly by Lisbon despite chronic controversy over its colonial banking monopoly. This 1921 note was issued for Mozambique, where BNU's relationship with the colonial administration was often tense, particularly around exchange rates between the local escudo and the metropolitan currency.
Bradbury, Wilkinson produced the plates to their usual exacting standard. The firm handled sensitive security printing for numerous colonial and dominion issuers during this period, and their intaglio work on BNU issues is generally among the more technically accomplished of the series.
