Annobón is a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic, administered as a province of Equatorial Guinea despite lying far closer to São Tomé than to the mainland. The island's population has periodically sought greater autonomy, and in 2012 protests turned violent enough that the government deployed military forces and reportedly shut down communications to the island entirely. This coin appeared the following year.
