Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen governed Dutch Brazil from 1637 to 1644, a tenure remarkable for its relative tolerance and genuine intellectual curiosity — he brought scientists, cartographers, and painters to Recife at his own expense. The Dutch West India Company found his administration too expensive and recalled him despite the colony's stability under his watch.
