Artem Mikoyan was born in 1905 in the village of Sanahin in what is now northern Armenia, and the 2005 issue marks the centenary of his birth. He co-founded the MiG design bureau with Mikhail Gurevich in 1939, and the bureau's aircraft became central to Soviet air power through the Cold War — the MiG-15 alone shocked Western forces when it appeared over Korea in 1950, outperforming nearly every aircraft the UN could field at the time.
Mikoyan died in 1970, never holding Armenian citizenship, having spent his entire career within the Soviet military-industrial apparatus in Moscow.
