Bazhbeuk-Melikian spent most of his career in Soviet-era Tbilisi, painting Armenian and Georgian subjects in a style shaped by Post-Impressionism that the Soviet cultural apparatus viewed with chronic suspicion. He died in 1966 largely unrecognized outside the Caucasus. Armenian commemorative silver issues in this series have periodically spotlighted figures marginalized by Soviet cultural politics — painters, writers, composers whose work survived institutional pressure without ever receiving institutional reward.
