Reverse description A nude ancient Greek long jumper is depicted in dynamic mid-jump pose, leaning forward with arms outstretched, rendered in a style evoking ancient Attic art. To the lower right, the emblem of the Pan-European Athletics Championships — a stylised winged figure — appears in the field. The legend XIII ΠΑΝΕΥΡΩΠΑΙΚΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ ΣΤΙΒΟΥ ΑΘΗΝΑ 1982 curves along the upper periphery, commemorating the XIII European Athletics Championships held in Athens. Along the lower periphery, the motto ΘΝ. ΚΑΙ ΘΣΚΑΓΑΘΟΣ (Kalos kai Agathos) is inscribed.

Additional information

Greece hosted the first Pan-European Games in 1981, and this commemorative was struck specifically to mark the occasion. The series was one of several silver issues the Greek mint produced during the early 1980s as the country adjusted to EEC membership, using commemorative programs partly to generate foreign exchange revenue from collector markets abroad.
