Greece in 1941 was under Axis occupation, and the Bank of Greece printing works continued operating under those conditions — meaning this note was produced during one of the most catastrophic monetary collapses in modern European history. The occupation authorities forced the Greek government to finance military costs through money creation, and emissions of existing denominations like this one expanded rapidly. By 1944, hyperinflation had rendered 100 Drachmai essentially worthless, with prices doubling in days.
The print run of just over 12 million looks modest against what followed — later wartime issues ran into the billions of notes.
