Jamaica's 100-dollar note went through several security iterations in the early 2000s as the Bank of Jamaica responded to counterfeiting pressure. This particular variant — without the segmented foil strip — predates the upgraded specification that became standard later in the series. The absence of the foil is the defining characteristic for collectors, since the two types are otherwise visually identical and frequently misattributed in bulk lots.
Thomas De La Rue printed the series throughout this period from their London facilities. The hummingbird watermark, Jamaica's national bird, had been a fixture of the island's currency well before this issue.
