Belize gained independence from Britain in 1981, but this coin predates that — issued when the territory was still British Honduras in transition, operating under the name Belize from 1973 while remaining a Crown Colony. The United Nations denomination ties to Belize's early internationalist positioning as it sought diplomatic legitimacy ahead of full sovereignty, complicated by Guatemala's longstanding territorial claim to the entire country, a dispute that kept British troops stationed there well into the 1990s.
The .500 fineness is notably low for a gold commemorative of this period, keeping metal costs down on what was effectively a small-nation prestige issue with limited distribution.
