Texas has issued its own currency before — during the Republic era, the infamous "redbacks" of the late 1830s collapsed to near-worthlessness through overissue. This modern $100 note has nothing to do with that tradition. Issued by the State of Texas beginning in 2016, it functions as a gift card instrument distributed through the Texas Treasury Safekeeping Trust Company, not a circulating banknote in any conventional sense.
The polymer substrate and the series' longevity through 2024 suggest a program with genuine transactional volume behind it.
