The Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority served all eight territories of the ECCA zone through conventional banknotes, so Antigua and Barbuda's 1981 independence-era commemorative issues occupied a different niche entirely — struck in fine silver against gold foil, these were never intended for circulation and were sold directly to collectors. Alan D'Estrehan's design work for the Caribbean commemorative market in this period was prolific, and his name appears across several island nation issues from the early 1980s.
The .999 silver substrate with 23K gold foil overlay was a format gaining traction among newly independent nations seeking hard-currency numismatic revenue. Antigua and Barbuda had become fully independent only on November 1, 1981.
