| Reverse description | A finely detailed facing portrait bust of Diana, Princess of Wales, occupying the central field, depicted with her characteristic short layered hairstyle and wearing drop earrings and a necklace. The commemorative inscription curves around the upper periphery in script lettering, flanked by the birth and death years at the lower left. Issued the same year Diana died in Paris — August 1997 — this piece was part of a wave of commemorative gold struck by small-nation mints that had no historical connection to the subject but held licensing arrangements with the Royal Mint or private distributors capitalizing on the global mourning response. Sierra Leone was itself in the middle of a devastating civil war at the time, the RUF having seized Freetown just months prior.
