100 Dollars / Piastres

The Banque d'Hochelaga was a Montreal-based francophone institution chartered in 1873, one of the few Quebec banks that survived the brutal contraction of Canadian chartered banking through the late nineteenth century — it eventually became the Banque Canadienne Nationale in 1924. This 100 Dollar / Piastres note dates from its early years, when the bilingual denomination wording was still standard practice for Quebec-based issuers navigating both anglophone commerce and francophone depositors.

The Canada Bank Note Printing Company had only been established in Montreal in 1866, consolidating several earlier engraving operations. At the 100-dollar level, actual circulation was minimal — these were largely interbank settlement instruments, which means surviving examples almost always show light handling relative to lower denominations from the same series.
