Hutt River Province, the self-declared micronation established by Leonard Casley in Western Australia in 1970, issued coins throughout the 1970s primarily as revenue-generating instruments rather than functional currency. This gold piece is among the earlier issues, predating the more commercially ambitious numismatic programs Hutt River would pursue in subsequent decades. Whether any of these coins circulated within the province — a farming property of roughly 75 square kilometers — is doubtful in any practical sense.
The X# prefix in the Standard Catalog denotes non-circulating or unofficial issues, a classification that fits Hutt River precisely. Casley's sovereignty claim was never recognized by Australia.
