The Principality of Hutt River is a micronation established in 1970 by Leonard Casley, a Western Australian wheat farmer who seceded from Australia in a dispute over wheat production quotas. It has never received international recognition, though it maintained its own currency, stamps, and diplomatic correspondence for decades. Coins issued under Leonard I circulate as novelty items and collectibles rather than as any functioning monetary instrument.
The America's Cup connection dates to Australia II's 1983 victory at Newport — the first non-American win in 132 years of the competition — which sparked a wave of Australian commemorative issues across both official and unofficial mints.
