Issued to mark the fifth anniversary of Namibian independence from South African administration — a transition formalized on March 21, 1990, after a UN-supervised election and decades of contested occupation under the South West Africa mandate. Gold commemoratives of this type were produced in strictly limited runs for the collector market; the Bank of Namibia had no infrastructure or tradition of domestic gold coinage prior to independence, making these early issues the first sovereign gold struck under the new republic's authority.
