Additional information

Eritrea declared independence from Ethiopia on May 24, 1993, following a UN-supervised referendum in which over 99.8% voted for separation — the culmination of a 30-year armed struggle. This issue was struck the same year, making it among the first coinage produced for one of the world's newest sovereign states. The newly established Eritrean government contracted foreign minting facilities, as no domestic mint infrastructure existed.

Mintages for this inaugural gold series were extremely limited, produced primarily for collectors rather than circulation.
