Belize gained independence from Britain in 1981, a full decade after neighboring nations in the region, largely due to Guatemala's long-standing territorial claim over the entire country — a dispute that kept British troops stationed there well into the 1990s. The 1991 date is particularly charged: that same year, Guatemala formally recognized Belizean sovereignty for the first time, though it stopped short of renouncing its territorial claims entirely.
