The Bahamas gained independence from Britain on July 10, 1973, after a referendum the previous year in which the Progressive Liberal Party under Lynden Pindling campaigned on a platform of full sovereignty. This $100 gold piece was part of the official independence coinage issued to mark that transition — a deliberate act of monetary nation-building by a government that had held power since 1967.
