Aanvullende informatie

William R. Tolbert Jr. had already been serving as Liberia's president for five years by 1976, having assumed office in 1971 following the death of William Tubman. This pattern piece was struck in bronze as a trial for the commemorative $100 gold issue marking Tolbert's formal inauguration ceremony — a belated ceremonial recognition rather than the start of his actual tenure. Patterns in base metal for high-denomination Liberian gold issues of this period were produced in very small numbers, primarily for archival and approval purposes, and rarely entered the numismatic market through conventional channels.

Tolbert was assassinated in April 1980 during a military coup led by Master Sergeant Samuel Doe.
