Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the Brunei Currency and Monetary Board, established in 1967 when Brunei introduced its own dollar pegged at par with the Singapore dollar — an arrangement that, unusually, remains in force to this day under the Currency Interchangeability Agreement. The Board itself was a precursor to full monetary independence, since Brunei would not establish a proper central bank until 2011.
At 46.65 g of .917 gold, this is a substantive bullion-adjacent commemorative rather than a token issue — the gold content alone makes it a meaningful store of value independent of its numismatic premium.
