Brunei's 1984 independence from Britain — ending a protectorate arrangement dating to 1888 — was an unusually quiet affair, with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah deliberately avoiding the armed struggle narratives common to post-colonial Southeast Asia. The decade anniversary issues of 1994 were produced in limited quantities across several denominations and metals, this gold piece among them. The Currency and Monetary Board, established only at independence itself, was still a relatively young institution when these commemoratives were authorized.
